Federal charges have been filed against a Connecticut Little League coach facing state child pornography charges in Rhode Island

Christopher Merchant of Canterbury appeared in U.S. District Court on Wednesday and was placed in federal custody.

A criminal complaint charges Merchant, 33, with interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual activity, transfer of obscene material to a person under the age of 16 years, receipt of child pornography, and possession of child pornography.

Merchant was arrested last week at a Warwick hotel.

Investigators said Merchant communicated with someone on social media he believed to be a 14-year-old boy and that he arranged to meet the boy to have sex.

Investigators also said they found child pornography on Merchant's cell phone.

Merchant is a vice president and coach of Plainfield Little League.

Rhode Island State Police earlier said there's no evidence the case involves any members of the team.
