Boxing champion caught carrying gun without permit in Providence
Middleweight boxing champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade was arrested in Providence Thursday for carrying a gun without a permit, according to authorities.
Providence police said Andrade was charged with felony possession of a firearm without a license.
The three-time middleweight world champ told Sports Team 10’s Joe Kayata it’s a legal gun that is registered to him. He said he has a permit to carry, however, it’s for New Hampshire.
Andrade also told NBC 10 he was moving his car from the street back into his driveway when a police car pulled up and started questioning him.
Maj. David Lapatin said officers spotted Andrade in his Mercedes stopped on Coggeshall Street around 2:30 a.m. They said he was blocking traffic while talking to a friend in another car.
Lapatin said Andrade appeared nervous and kept glancing at a backpack on the floor of his car. Police said they searched the bag and found a Glock 19 pistol and magazine with 10 rounds.
Col. Hugh Clements told Gene Valicenti on WPRO that there have been several incidents of gun violence in that neighborhood and that his officers had the right to search the bag because it was in arms-reach of Andrade, who said there might be a weapon in the car.
Andrade was arraigned and later released on bail.
