Caught on camera: Man threatens clerk, steals cash from Warwick store

    (Warwick Police Department)

Police in Warwick are asking the public to help them identify a suspect wanted in an early-morning armed robbery at a convenient store.

Authorities said security camera footage shows the suspect entering the Seasons Corner Market at 1190 Quaker Lane near the East Greenwich line just before 3:30 a.m. He was wearing a hood and mask and carrying a knife or screwdriver.

The suspect dropped a bag on the counter and made a beeline behind the counter to where the cigarettes were kept. Investigators said the robber got away with six packs of cigarettes.

The clerk, who was working alone, emptied the cash drawer into the suspect’s bag before the assailant ran out of the store.

Detective Lt. Scott Robillard of the Warwick Police Department said that the clerk did everything right to protect himself from injury or something worse.

"He did everything he had to do and he did it quickly,” said Robillard. “He waited the appropriate amount of time until the assailant was out of the area. He called with as good a description as he could, considering the situation."

Robillard said the suspect got away with about $100 in cash, but missed an opportunity. The clerk was preparing for a money drop. He had about $400 in cash wrapped and ready to put away, sitting on the counter. The suspect didn't see it and the clerk didn't hand it over.

"Luckily for the business, the suspect didn't see the money sitting on the counter,” said Robilliard. “(The suspect) was so focused on getting his cigarettes and asking the clerk to fill up the bag that he overlooked the money that was sitting right there on the counter."

Warwick police asked anyone who can identify the robber to contact District 3 Detectives John Kelly at 401-468-4254 or, Nadine Parmenter at 401-468-4250 or or Adam Arico at 401-468-4267 or
