About two dozen children from Central Falls went on a shopping spree Saturday, accompanied by police officers from their city.

It’s part of Target’s Heroes and Helpers program, in which the retailer provides the kids with $100 gift cards.

The goal is to build a bridge between the police department and the community it serves.

"If you want to change a community the way you do it is target the kids and I think we're definitely going to see that change in the future especially younger officers like myself," said Officer Stephanie Ruano of the Central Falls Police Department.

Saturday’s shopping experience took place at Target’s location at the Lincoln Mall.

"We're really excited to see the kids going around, pick out their favorite toys and really help to bring some more joy to the holidays," said Target Store Manager Thiago Araujo.

The children received a police escort from police headquarters to the Target store and back, and got to enjoy pizza following their shopping adventure.
