Authorities in Rhode Island are investigating the death of a 9-year-old girl.

The Department of Children, Youth and Families on Friday told NBC 10 News that there is an open investigation concerning the death of the child and is working collaboratively with detectives from the Warwick Police Department.

A spokeswoman said DCYF “had previous involvement with the family, but they were not open at the time the investigation began. Due to confidentiality laws, we are prohibited from sharing additional information.”

Maj. Mark Ullucci said Warwick police responded to a home on Oakland Beach Avenue Thursday just before 5 p.m. after receiving a medical call about a child with previous medical conditions. The child was taken by rescue to Kent Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

The Providence Journal reported that the child, an unidentified girl, shared the home “with as many as seven other children.”
