SEEKONK, Mass. (WJAR) -- A Seekonk developer says he's changed his plans for building on the land behind the old Showcase Cinemas building on Fall River Avenue.
The property owner told NBC 10 News that he's looking to build affordable housing units on the property instead of about 100 townhouses .
Seekonk's town administrator estimates as many as 1,000 people could show up Monday for a special town meeting regarding rezoning. A meeting scheduled earlier this week had to be canceled at the last minute because of the large turnout.
Developer Charles Tapalian bought the old Showcase site on Fall River Avenue after it sat vacant over the past decade. He also owns the Greenbrier apartment complex behind the old movie theater.
The housing proposal is separate from another plan the developer has to potentially lease part of the property to a Maine businessman for a marijuana grow facility. That proposal needs its own zoning change to move forward.
