Mattress fire closes Mass. Ave. bridge in Boston


Massachusetts State Police said a fire under the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge in Boston apparently involved mattresses.

A fire closed the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge in Boston on Thursday.

"Engineers to use X-ray to check for structural damage. Debris fell between east & west lanes of Storrow, which is open," state police said on Twitter.

The bridge, which connects the Back Bay with Cambridge, was closed for a time, but reopened with lane restrictions.

Smoke was seen coming from the area at about 11:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
