Former Narragansett police officer pleads guilty to pornography charge
A federal prosecutor said Thursday that a former Narragansett police officer pleaded guilty to a pornography charge.
U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island Stephen Dambruch said Matthew Riley pleaded guilty in Providence federal court to a charge of transfer of obscene material to a minor. Riley is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 1.
Prosecutors said Riley, 51, sent explicit pictures and videos of himself to a 15-year-old girl through text messages and apps.
"Over the course of a few months, at times stopping for days or weeks, and then resuming, Riley’s communications with the 15-year-old included sexually explicit communications, including graphic, sexually explicit pictures of himself and videos of himself committing a sex act," a news release from the U.S. attorney said.
Prosecutors said he called himself "Chris M. They said he told the girl he was 29, lived in Boston, was in the Navy, and worked as a physical therapist.
One week after authorities raided his home in October 2017, Riley retired from the Narragansett police after 29 years the job.
