Funeral to be held for fallen soldier who lived in Fall River

Army Sgt. 1st Class Eric M. Emond

A funeral for a Massachusetts native who was killed in the line of duty will be held Friday.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Eric M. Emond, 39, will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

He was killed by an explosive in Afghanistan in November.

Emond had more than 21 years of military service and served in the Marine Corps, as well as the Army. It was his seventh tour overseas.

Family members told NBC 10 News that Emond went to B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River during the 1990s and also co-founded Massachusetts Fallen Heroes, a nonprofit organization that helps military veterans and Gold Star families.

Gov. Charlie Baker has ordered U.S. and state flags to be lowered in honor of Emond.
