Only on 10: Gas station clerk says it's 'crazy' he sold winning Mega Millions ticket
For someone who walked into the Sunoco station on Warren Avenue, Friday the 13th was their lucky day.
Rhode Island just made some lucky people multi-millionaires, and for the first time, a big Mega Millions winner bought a ticket in Rhode Island.
Although the name of the person who bought the winning ticket hasn’t yet been released, lottery officials confirmed that two people are claiming it together.
“Everyone was really excited,” said Melissa Juhnowski of Rhode Island Lottery. “We've been waiting a long time to have a Mega Million dollar winner here.”
A near $43-million jackpot will be split between Rhode Island and Michigan, where the other winning ticket was sold with the same six numbers.
Trevor Smith was the clerk working behind the counter at the East Providence gas station where the winning ticket was sold.
“I never thought I'd sell anybody the winning ticket,” said Smith.
That’s especially because he said he sold a prize sharing a $43 million.
“That's crazy,” Smith said with a laugh. “I didn't believe we sold the winning ticket when they told me.”
Friday afternoon at 4:39 p.m. is the moment it happened.
“It could have been any time of any day, and it turned out to be me,” said Smith.
This will be the first mega-millions win since Rhode Island joined the multi-state game in 2010.
“I thought the chances of that were just insane,” said Smith, as the odds of winning that jackpot is one in about 260 million.
Although the winner hasn't come forward yet, the RI lottery said the two people who are claiming the ticket together have called the office. When they turn that lucky ticket in, $786,000 in taxes will go back to the state.
Something rare, those six winning numbers were picked by the Rhode Island winners, not a quick pick.
The winning numbers played were 2, 7, 18, 26, 31, and Mega Ball 12.
