Historic RI church organ receives a “bon voyage” mass
After 58 years, the St. Mary’s Church mass organ is being dismantled and sent to Quebec to be overhauled by its original builder.
The church, located in Newport is internationally known as not only Rhode Island’s first Roman Catholic Parish but also the church where President John F. Kennedy (then Senator) married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier in 1953.
Refurbishing the organ is to be done by hand using techniques originally used by the original craftsmen.
The celebration mass was held in the evening on Saturday, October 01, 2016. In the organ's absence, St. Mary's will rebuild the choir lost space to ensure the space where the organ will return is both structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing.
The entire project is expected to be finished by Easter Sunday of 2017.
