CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — The Associated Press projected Republican Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung to defeat Democratic House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, one of Rhode Island's most powerful politicians, in the House District 15 race in Cranston.
The AP made the projection before all ballots have been included in the final state tally. Fenton-Fung was leading with about 65% of the vote in unofficial results as of 8:45 p.m.
Fenton-Fung told NBC 10's Parker Gavigan that she was not yet ready to declare victory.
"We're highly superstitious. We're in a really strong position right now," said Fenton-Fung, the wife of Cranston Mayor Allan Fung. "Very cautiously optimistic."
NBC 10's Brian Crandall reported that Mattiello's campaign said it was "way too early" to call.
At the start of the campaign, Fenton-Fung quickly came out swinging against Mattiello, hitting him on recent scandals and investigations and painting herself as the candidate who will bring a fresh start.
She continually brought up the speaker's testimony in last month's trial of his former campaign aide on a money laundering charge.
"I think the trial, the Jeff Britt trial, brought to light some more of the seedier details. So, for people who kind of thought, well, you know, it doesn't have to do with him, saw the details of the trial come out and were like, no we cannot allow this to go on any longer," Fenton-Fung said.
Mattiello denied any involvement.
He has been House speaker for more than six years, and a state representative for nearly 14 years.
Mattiello has faced controversies in the past year, including ordering an audit of the Rhode Island Convention Center that came under question.
But Mattiello is trying to use his position as speaker as a strength in this race to hold onto his seat.
"I think the race is decided. But to the extent we need a closing argument, I want to continue to do the things we’ve done, cut taxes, create an environment that’s conducive to job growth, continue the phase out of the car tax. I’m the only one who’s going to get that done," Mattiello said.
The speaker has had a tight race in the last two elections.
