Nearly two years after fatally shooting a man in Fall River, Jeffrey Souza was sentenced to life in prison Monday.

Souza was found guilty of second-degree murder in September. Prosecutors said he shot 28-year-old Kyle Brady with an illegal gun on the corner of Albert and Huard Streets. Souza fled the scene and hid out in Newport until his arrest days later.

Authorities said Souza and Brady had a long-running dispute over a woman, as Brady was believed to have been dating Souza’s ex-girlfriend. The two men sent each other hundreds of text messages leading up to the confrontation.

Prosecutors said Souza brought a gun to a fist fight and shot Brady in the chest just after midnight on New Year's Day of last year.

In court on Monday, Brady’s loved ones remembered the man who was killed.

“To lose a child is the most excruciating pain I ever felt in my life,” Brady’s father said. “I wanted to die at that moment. He was a great son.”

Brady's sister shared similar sentiments. She had been with him celebrating before the shooting.

“Kyle's smile was infectious and his presence was always known,” she said. “He was the type of person you could always count on and family always came first in his life. An hour after the ball dropped, the lives of my family and I were forever changed. I held my brother in my arms as I tried to save his life by administering CPR. I felt my brother take his last breath. I watched his life slowly fade away before my eyes.”

Brady had a daughter who was just over a year old at the time of his death.

“She often asks if daddy is going to come home from heaven soon (or) of daddy is OK and states how much she misses and loves her dad and that she’s sad,” the mother of his child said in court. “Kyle was amazing dad to our little girl.”

Souza will be eligible for parole in 15 years.
