Kennebunkport community saddened by news of Barbara Bush's failing health
The news that former first lady Barbara Bush is in failing health and has ended medical treatment hits particularly hard in Kennebunkport, Maine, where the Bushes have a home.
The Bush compound at Walker's Point has been a family retreat for more than 100 years.
While the Bush family is now in Texas, those in her home away from home are sending their thoughts and prayers to the family.
Several restaurants and stores in town have pictures on the walls of the former first lady and president.
Many people in town said they've known Barbara and George H.W. Bush for years and despite only living here for half of the year, they say Mrs. Bush is a pillar of the community.
The owners of HP Provisions in Kennebunkport said they are longtime friends of the Bushes.
They said losing Barbara Bush will be a big loss to the community, but their memories of her in Maine will last a lifetime.
"We're kind of rounding another corner of her life. It'll be a big loss for us, but we also are so incredibly fortunate and blessed and honored that we've been a part of her life in a very small way," said Helen Thorgalsen and Bonnie Clement of HP Provisions.
The sentiment was shared by many business owners in Kennebunkport who regularly saw Mrs. Bush.
Everyone in town said their thoughts and prayers are with the former first lady and her family.
