A light winter snow caused major traffic headaches Monday morning as the Rhode Island Department of Transportation responded to multiple crashes and spinouts.

The snow began falling sometime after 7:00a.m. setting off a series of accidents on major highways. Route 6 in Johnston experienced serious delays and I-95 and route 146 around the Providence also had several slowdowns.



The National Weather Service says the snow "blossomed" suddenly in the in the state and reports the conditions will persist throughout the morning before calming down in the afternoon. Only an inch of snow is expected to accumulate except in isolated areas.

Motorists are advised to use caution as the roads are said to icy and slippery.
