Lincoln Chafee's daughter qualifies for Olympics
Warwick's Louisa Chafee, daughter of former Rhode Island governor and presidential candidate Lincoln Chafee, will be presenting the United States this summer in Rio on the USA Olympic Sailing team.
The 2014 Brown University graduate and her racing partner, Bora Gulari, qualified at the Nacra 17 class championships in Clearwater, Floridaon Sunday. They will be competing at the summer games in the two-person mixed multihull event.
"This week was definitely one of the most challenging weeks of sailing that we could have had as a new team, but we persevered and that's the most important thing when it comes to these types of trials in sailing," Louisa said. "That what was most important - persevering and reminding ourselves every day that we are a team and we can do this."
Louisa will visit Rhode Island later this week to regroup.
"I am going to hibernate and eat and do some working out and try to get my body back up to the level it needs to be for the next six months," she said.
Louisa joined Olympic-class sailing after an All-American collegiate career at Brown, according to TeamUSA.org. Gulari is a two-time Moth world champion and U.S. Sailing Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.
