Man charged in Fall River stabbing held without bail

Patrick Theriault (WJAR)

Bristol County prosecutors said Friday that a 22-year-old man was held without bail during an arraignment on charges connected to a Fall River stabbing.

Patrick Theriault has been accused of stabbing 37-year-old John Soares on Saturday night at the Ship's Cove Apartments.

A spokesman said police officers found Soares suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was eventually transferred to Rhode Island Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

The district attorney's office said Theriault faces charges of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Fall River police said Theriault was staying with his girlfriend in the apartment building.

Theriault's defense attorney Kenneth Van Colen said he's confident there's more to the story.

“There’s always more to this than meets the eye,” he said. “There is an issue of self-defense, as well as identification.

Theriault is due back in court next week.
