Man who threatened police with chainsaw ordered to undergo mental health counseling

James Matteson (WJAR)

A West Greenwich man accused of threatening police with a running chainsaw has been ordered to receive mental health counseling.

Police said James Matteson appeared in court on Wednesday and was convicted of disorderly conduct, as well as obstruction. He was sentenced to a year and a half behind bars, suspended sentence.

In December, police said he revved a chainsaw at officers, who were looking for his father at the time.

Matteson ran from the scene but later surrendered to police.
