Authorities say an underground electrical fire caused a series of underground explosions in Brockton that blew off three manhole covers and set fire to a car.
It happened around 3:30 p.m. on Friday. No injuries were reported, but the area around Main Street was evacuated.
National Grid cut off power to the area so that the fire could burn itself out. Just before 11 p.m., power was restored to the area.
Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter told WCVB-TV that they caught a break. Not many people were in the area because of the July 4th holiday weekend. He says police and fire were able to respond immediately.
Authorities are investigating what happened.
