The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles is warning of a text phishing scam.

The registry is telling residents to ignore texts claiming to be from the "DMV" or "Department of Motor Vehicles."

It says that should be the first red flag because there is no agency called "DMV" in Massachusetts.

The phishing scam asks people to click on a link to update their personal information.

"Please note that the RMV does not send unsolicited requests for personal and/or contact information to customers by text," the RMV said in a release. "Any communication by text from the RMV would be as a result of a customer-initiated request or transaction."

The RMV said don't respond to the texts. The messages should be deleted.

Similar scams have been reported in other states.
