Plainville police warn residents of porch pirates among rash of thefts

USPS packages (MGN)

It’s the season of gifts and the season for porch pirates.

As the gifting season ramps up police are seeing an increase of stolen packages and the Plainville Police Department is warning residents of the problem.

The department says that at least four thefts were reported as of Wednesday night.

According to police three occurred in the Garrison Drive, Colonial Way neighborhood.

Police say that thieves are following delivery trucks and stealing the packages as soon as they are delivered.

In Johnston, surveillance footage captured the moment when seconds after the package is placed, an individual runs out of a car and takes it.

The department says that between Thanksgiving and the New Year is the peak season for parcel thefts.

Police are advising residents to request notifications on delivers, such as text messages or emails.

They also recommend requiring a signature to ensure packages are not just left unattended.

And finally, consider sending a package to a location where someone will be able to receive them.
