NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WJAR) — A man was shot to death Wednesday afternoon in the city's South End, according to the New Bedford Police Department.
The shooting happened at about 3:15 p.m. in the area of David Street and East Rodney French Boulevard.
As officers arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Adilson Neves, 36, of New Bedford, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where he died.
"That neighborhood will be affected, that family will be affected," said David Lima, executive minister at the Inter-Church Council of Greater New Bedford. "There's a ripple effect that occurs."
This is the second deadly shooting in the city within the last month. Lima said violence usually increases when the weather warms but believes the pandemic has fueled the uptick nationwide and here in his community.
"People have a lot of things they're truly dealing with and sometimes it translates to extreme behavior and that's where the violence occurs and the difficulties we face in the community," Lima told NBC 10 News Wednesday. "Respect for life, respect for being able to resolve our issues without resorting to violence becomes major."
Investigators said there's no suspects in custody at this time.
The shooting remains under investigation.
