Police seek suspects in counterfeit money scheme

The Smithfield Police Department is asking the public to help them identify three people involved in a counterfeit money scheme.

Authorities said two men and a woman walked into the 7-Eleven at 970 Douglas Pike in Smithfield on December 12 around 5 p.m.

One of the men bought various food items before loading money onto a Green Dot prepaid card.

"The notes were later determined to be counterfeit," police said, noting that 17 $20 bills were passed.

The man who made the purchase was described as having a dark complexion and a medium build. Police also said he is tall, has a medium build and was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt.

Police said the other man is also tall and has a medium build. He has a medium complexion.

The woman, said police, is short, has a medium build and a light complexion.
