A Brockton woman charged with murdering her two young children claimed she was performing a "voodoo ritual" during the stabbing, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said Tuesday.

Assistant District Attorney Jessica Kenny said Latarsha Sanders, 43, stabbed her sons repeatedly over the weekend.

The victims were identified as Edson Brito, 8, and Lason Brito, 5.

Cruz said Edson Brito was stabbed 50 times in the face, neck, legs and stomach. An autopsy was being performed on Lason Brito Tuesday.

Sanders told police she stabbed her children as part of a voodoo ritual, though she initially placed the blame on their biological father.

Cruz said police were called to the three-story apartment building at 247 Prospect St. Monday after Sanders began acting hysterical and asked a neighbor to call 911. During the well-being check, police found the children covered in sheets in their beds. The Office of the Medical Examiner said it believes the boys were killed Saturday.

"She cleaned blood. The weapon was found in the sink of the kitchen of the home, also cleaned up," Cruz said. "That’s all information you need to look at to make a determination as to whether or not somebody was able to make competent rational, decisions, at the time they were trying to cover their tracks.”

According to court documents, police interviewed a relative who told them Sanders was "mentally unstable and crazy" and "obsessed with the Illuminati."

Kenny said Sanders has five children. Two are adults.

Sanders' defense attorney Joseph Krowski Jr. said he could not make a bail request having not seen some documents. Judge Paula Clifford held Sanders without bail, without prejudice. Her next court appearance is set for April 9.
