The Rhode Island Senate has approved legalizing recreational marijuana use for adults.
Lawmakers said Tuesday's vote marks the first time either chamber of the Legislature has voted on a bill to legalize cannabis. The proposal now heads to the state House of Representatives.
Democratic Speaker Joe Shekarchi has said lawmakers will likely address creation of a legal marijuana industry in a special session later this year.
The senate proposal would impose a 20% tax on marijuana sales, create an independent cannabis control commission and allow for home cultivation.
Gov. Daniel McKee also has his own plan for legalizing marijuana.
