RI giant pumpkin grower sets North American record

The largest pumpkin ever grown in North America was produced in Rhode Island.

The monster gourd tipped the scales at 2,230.5 pounds at the annual Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Growers Weigh Off, which was held Saturday at Frerichs Farm in Warren.

It was grown by Ron Wallace of Greene. His previous record was 2,009 pounds -- the first one-ton pumpkin -- three years ago.

The pumpkin is not only the largest ever grown in North America, it is the second largest in the word.
