Sen. Cynthia Coyne announced on Monday she will not seek a fifth term in the Rhode Island Senate.

Coyne said she looks forward to spending more time with her family and friends.

First elected to the Senate in 2014, public safety was a focal point of her work after retiring at the rank of lieutenant in 2006.

Coyne has served for District 32 Barrington, Bristol, and East Providence and said she still plans on being very active in the community.

Her work included prohibiting untraceable ghost guns and 3-D printed guns and removing firearms from felony abusers.

As current Chairwoman of the Judiciary Committee, she recently was the lead Senate sponsor of the legislation limiting firearm magazine capacity to 10 rounds that will go to Gov. Dan McKee's desk on Tuesday.

“I have always tried to build bridges, not barriers,” said Coyne in a release. “The issues that come before the Judiciary Committee are some of the most emotional and divisive issues to be considered by the Senate. I tried to find common ground and start from a place of respect to build consensus whenever we could. We were able to get a lot accomplished, and I am appreciative of everyone I have had the opportunity to work with over the years.”

She also was the leader of a commission that looked into ways to improve Rhode Island's protection against elder abuse and financial exploitation.

A graduate of the FBI National Academy, Coyne previously was a member of the Barrington Town Council.
