Worcester man faces DUI charges in wrong-way crash on Route 146

A Worcester man is under arrest after being involved in a wrong way crash early Saturday morning in North Smithfield.

Around 3 a.m. Rhode Island State Police and the North Smithfield Police Department investigated a wrong way crash on Route 146 North in the town of North Smithfield.

As a result of this investigation, the Rhode Island State Police charged a Worcester, Massachusetts male with driving under the influence of liquor and/ or drugs, resulting in serious bodily injury (three counts) and reckless driving.

The investigation revealed that 22-year-old Aleksandro Mihali of Worcester, Massachusetts was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Route 146 as he entered Rhode Island from Massachusetts.

The State Police allege Aleksandro Mihali was traveling the wrong direction in the high-speed lane and collided head on with a Honda Accord approximately 800 feet south of the state line.

The Honda Accord was traveling northbound in the high speed lane at the time of the collision. The two female occupants of the Honda Accord sustained serious bodily injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to Rhode Island Hospital by rescue personnel.

Aleksandro Mihali and a sole female passenger in his vehicle were also transported to Rhode Island Hospital as a result of the injuries they sustained. The identity of the three involved injured parties are being withheld at this time.

North Smithfield and State Police say Mihali faces three counts of driving under the influence.

The investigation remains ongoing and is being investigated by members of the Rhode Island State Police, North Smithfield Police, Rhode Island State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and Rhode Island State Police Forensic Services Unit.
