A Southwest Airlines plane was struck by lightning while on its way to T.F. Green Airport in Warwick Friday, according to the airline.

Michelle Agnew, who is a spokeswoman for Southwest, said the plane was on its way to Rhode Island from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when the strike occurred during the afternoon.

“Our Network Operations Center notified me that Flight 1498 operating from Ft. Lauderdale to Providence this afternoon experienced a lightning strike on its decent into PVD,” Agnew said, noting that the plane landed “uneventfully.”

She added that maintenance was performed on the plane and it was swapped for the continuation of the flight number to Baltimore/Washington and taken out of service.
