Traffic restricted to one lane each way on Newport Bridge
The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority said lane restrictions went into place on the Claiborne Pell Bridge, connecting Jamestown and Newport, starting Tuesday.
Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction. Drivers should expect delays of 15 to 20 minutes, RITBA said.
Officials said drivers should try to avoid using the bridge during morning and afternoon rush hours if they can.
RITBA said vehicles wider than 8 feet 6 inches or heavier than 80,000 pounds will be banned from the bridge.
The authority is repairing the bridge's deck.
"I can't stress enough the structure is safe. However, the bridge was built in 1969 and it's time for the road surface to be repaired," said RITBA Executive Director Buddy Croft.
Rhode Island State Police will be stationed at the bridge to assure traffic flows as smoothly as possible.
The lane closures will be in place until June 29. From June 29 to Sept. 18, all lanes will be open for the summer tourism season. The single travel lanes will be put back in place starting Sept. 19.
