Warwick adds 24 new firefighters

The Warwick Fire Department on Tuesday night honored 24 new firefighter recruits who recently graduated from the training academy.

Among them was Victoria L. Bellavance, who is the third person in her family to serve the department, as her father and brother are current members.

"It's a big deal to be able to help people and be there for the community," Bellavance, who was the only woman in the city's latest training class, told NBC 10 News.

Bellavance, along with the other recruits, were sworn in during a ceremony at Crowne Plaza on Greenwich Avenue Tuesday night.

Mayor Scott Avedisian and Fire Chief James McLaughlin were at the event and were joined by members of the Warwick Fire Department, as well as the Board of Public Safety, to celebrate the firefighters.

Avedisian administered the oath of office and offer remarks, while Father Robert Marciano, who is the department chaplain, gave the invocation, and Father Peter Mongeon offered the benediction.

The Fire Department Honor Guard posted colors, with retired Capt. William H. Tyler singing the national anthem.
