A police officer said he suspects that he saw a toddler suffering from child abuse.

The Westerly Police Department told NBC 10 News on Thursday that they are conducting an investigation after the officer said he witnessed a suspect walking with a three-year-old girl on John Street a few days prior.

The officer noticed that the little girl had a head injury. He called an ambulance, and the child was taken to the hospital.

It’s unclear of the man’s relationship with the child or whether charges will be filed.

The Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families has been notified, according to authorities.
