The Bristol County District Attorney's Office said Tuesday that a 36-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Fall River and that her 26-year-old boyfriend was charged with murder.

Prosecutors said Scott Rego was arrested Tuesday at the hospital, where they said he was taken after the killing of Kristina Reis.

Police were called to Rego's house at 17 Linden St. at about 9:18 p.m. Monday and found Reis bleeding from an apparent stab wound on the front porch. Reis was later pronounced dead at Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Prosecutors said Rego was inside the couple's apartment suffering from a wound to the chest, an injury he allegedly incurred while committing the homicide.

He was taken to St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River before being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was arrested and charged.

The owner of the home, who lives on the first floor, told NBC 10 News that the couple had lived in the Linden Street apartment for only about a month.

He said Reis knocked on his door Monday night, presumably to ask for help, and when he opened it, she collapsed to the ground.

People who live nearby said they heard the couple fight before in the past. Still, they were stunned to learn the news.

"I was shocked this morning when I woke up,” Maria Dacosta, who lives next door, said. “My husband says, ‘A lot of blood next door.’ I said, ‘Wow. My God.’ I was shocked.”

Once Rego is well enough to be released from the hospital, he’ll have to be formally arraigned in Rhode Island as a fugitive from justice before he can be returned to Massachusetts to face the murder charge.

An autopsy on Reis will be conducted, according to a statement from District Attorney Thomas Quinn III.
