Suspect arrested in connection with stabbing death of D.C. jogger
WASHINGTON (WJLA) -- Police have arrested a suspect in the murder of a woman who was killed while jogging in D.C. Tuesday evening. The suspect is 23-year-old Anthony Crawford of D.C.
The victim, 35-year-old Wendy Karina Martinez, was unconscious and unresponsive when authorities got to the scene. Witnesses said her injuries were severe.
It happened just before 8 p.m. The Logan Circle neighborhood, where the attack took place, is widely regarded as a safe area, often busy with foot traffic. One woman said the street where Martinez was stabbed is considered one of her "safe routes at night."
Martinez, a Georgetown University graduate, worked as the Chief of Staff at D.C.-based software, data, and media company FiscalNote. She was engaged last week, her family says.
Neighbors who were in the area when the stabbing took place say she appeared to be wearing jogging clothes and was running through the neighborhood.
They say she was stopped at the corner waiting to cross the intersection when she was stabbed. Police have said they believe the attack was random.
Neighbors said a few witnesses rushed to help her and were able to carry her into a nearby restaurant, where they tried to administer first aid.
Police Chief Peter Newsham was among those who responded to the scene, and a tweet from the Metropolitan Police Department originally said officers were looking for three black males in connection to the stabbing.
Authorities now say they are looking for one single suspect, described as wearing a long-sleeved mustard-colored shirt coming down to his thighs, with dark colored sweatpants.
The tweet also cautioned anyone who has information on the suspects' whereabouts not to take action but to call 911 right away.
Martinez's family released the following statement Wednesday evening:
"We are deeply saddened by this senseless tragedy. Wendy Karina Martinez was the light of our lives. Not only was she an avid runner, but she was a devout Christian, a wonderful friend, and a driven professional. Everything you hope that a daughter and a friend could be. She was also excited to be planning her upcoming wedding to her fiancé, Daniel Hincapie. They were engaged just last week.
We ask that you respect our privacy as we grieve the passing of her beautiful soul and inform her friends and family of this terrible news. We also want to encourage the community to please contact the police with any information that may lead to finding justice for Wendy. The hotline number to call is 202-727-9099.
Simply put, Wendy was fearfully and wonderfully made! Now we know she has found the one whom her soul loved. (Song of Solomon 3:4)"
The D.C. running community has rallied together in an effort to find Martinez's killer and prevent future similar attacks. Several runners have stopped to leave flowers on the corner where she was killed, and a vigil has been scheduled for Thursday evening.
