Many long-time or native Rhode Islanders certainly remember the credit union collapse in the early 1990s when 45 institutions had to close for lack of deposit insurance. Customers couldn't get to their money for several years.

Those depositors scored a minor victory on April 16, 1992, when top officers at four closed credit unions wanted to get their money back when everyone else was paid off. They were told no.
