Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea is considering moving the date of Rhode Island's primary election.

The Providence Journal reported that it could go from the second Tuesday in September to the third Tuesday in August.

Gorbea pitched her idea to the Board of Elections, saying it could give more people the opportunity to vote and would eliminate a need to close schools used as polling places.

If passed, the change would take effect next year.
