Rhode Island Commerce Secretary Stefan Pryor announced Tuesday that he will run for general treasurer as a Democrat.

Pryor will leave the Rhode Island Commerce Corp. within two weeks. He’s been there since 2015.

"I know that I can bring steady experience and acumen to the treasurer's office, that no matter what happens to this economy, there are rumors there may be a recession, we're certainly seeing inflation. I can help Rhode Island through the good times and certainly through the toughest of times, the crises that may be ahead," Pryor told NBC 10's Brian Crandall.

Pryor said he has list of goals for the office if elected.

"I think we can offer relief and ongoing support for small businesses. I think we can help households get back on their feet coming out of the pandemic-based downturn. I think we can help women escaping domestic violence find financial resources separate from the household in which they have an abuser. I think there are things we can do at the treasurer's office that are unique. And I want to be a part of that," Pryor said.

He will face former Central Falls Mayor James Diossa in a primary.
