Newport Bermuda Race (WJAR)

The 51st edition of the Newport Bermuda Race set sail Friday.

A fleet of 171 yachts will race 635 miles from Rhode Island to Bermuda in about three days. The start was at 1 p.m.

The race, which dates back to 1906, is held every two years.

Participants said it's a must-see for sailing fans.

"They're seeing a classic race that's been going for over 100 years. They're witnessing something that has taken place every two years. It's a spectacle," said John Winder, a participant.

Spectators viewed the start from Fort Adams and Castle Hill.
