Providence teen earns golf scholarship to University of Oklahoma
Providence golfer Patrick Welch will be heading to the University of Oklahoma in the fall on a golf scholarship.
Welch didn't play the sport his senior year at Classical High School, choosing instead to enjoy his last year of high school playing basketball and baseball.
Now, he is working hard this summer on his golf game and preparing for division 1 golf.
"Yeah, I'm pretty excited,” he said. “You know, I finished baseball and basketball, so I'm done with high school, I graduated last week. Now, it’s just 100 percent golf. I'm going to play as much as I can -- play in a lot of tournaments, especially this one, being one of the biggest ones, and just try to get ready.”
But while Welsh enjoyed baseball during the spring, he still worked on his golf game. He said he'll be ready for college.
“After practices or baseball games, I would just, like, go to the range for like a half-hour (or) an hour and try to get a little bit of practice in,” he said. “It can be tough, because I get pretty tired and I need my sleep, so yeah.”
