Three-time world boxing champion set for New England return
East Providence native Kali Reis, who is a three-time world boxing champion, will be making her return to New England Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.
"It's a treat just to be home in front of my hometown crowd, right back in it,” Reis said. “I just fought, so just to keep that momentum going and my hometown crowd is one of the best, so I’m real excited."
Reis’ last fight in May was a historic bout against undisputed champion and No. 1 pound-for-pound female boxer, Cecilia Braekhus.
Reis gave the champ a run for her money in the first women’s match that ever aired on HBO.
"It was -- the experience in itself, just being out there in California -- fighting at the StubHub Center, dealing with HBO, being the first female fight on HBO and fighting one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in male or female, was just incredible,” said Reis. “(It is) one of the experiences that I've and many fighters look forward to when they start when they step foot in the gym.”
Reis said the historic fight on HBO is already paying dividends to her career.
"It was really important for us to show out and perform really well, so it could be something that opens doors on all networks and people can who actually don’t follow women’s boxing anymore might start following it now and it opens a lot more doors," said Reis
Reis will face Patty Ramirez Saturday night in an eight-round showdown at Mohegan Sun Arena.
