On The Slopes: Sunday River

Sunday River, in Newry, Maine, is one of Maine's largest and most visited ski resorts. With a vertical drop of over 2,300 feet, it is the second largest in Maine and the sixth largest in New England.

Darcy Lambert is the director of communications for Sunday River.

"Sunday River is one of New England's largest mountain resorts. We have 8 interconnected mountain peaks. We're a 135 trails spread across 870 acres. From one end of the resort to the other, it's 3 miles long. We're big skiing. We've got a lot of slope side lodging to take advantage of. We've got a tremendous ski and ride school. It's really a destination resort that anybody can come to. Whether you're a beginner, just starting out, or somebody that is looking for more advanced terrain," explained Darcy.

With strategically placed high speed lifts on each peak, you can get in more trips down the trails, one run after another.

"We have 14 lifts on the mountain. Our signature lift, which is the Chondola . It takes skiers and riders out of our Southridge base area, which is kind of the hub of the resort, and it will spread them across 6 other mountain peaks from there. A lot of lifts, a lot of opportunity to explore different parts of the mountain from one central location," said Lambert.

If you’re in need of a lesson, Darcy described the ski school at Sunday River. "The ski school here is tremendous. We've been doing this for a long time. We've been perfecting people's curves as we like to say. So we really specialize in getting people comfortable with both the equipment, if they are new to the sport. But once they are comfortable with the equipment, it's about learning the basics, the fundamentals that's gonna take them to be a lifelong skier or a lifelong snowboarder."

Darcy also said, "It's a big mountain. You're never gonna tire of the terrain because there is a ton to explore. One day you may be interested in skiing the trees, the next day you might be interested in doing more steeps, more bumps, more terrain parks. So it's one of those opportunities where if you are able to come here, you want to spend a few days to really get to understand the terrain. Get to know the mountain and take advantage of all that there is."

Sunday River has a lot to offer for all skill sets. The terrain offers steeps, glades, and wide open corduroy all while offering stunning views of the Mahoosuc Mountain range, Mount Washington, and the Presidentials from atop the peaks.
