On The Tee: U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills
The 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills is just around the corner. The 188th U.S. Open is scheduled for June 14-17 on Long Island. This will be the fifth U.S. Open and fifth men's professional major held at the course.
The president of Shinnecock Hills, Barrett Pickett, discussed hosting the U.S. Open.
"We are gathered at a club that was conceived 127 years ago when golf was a cultural curiosity in America. In 1891, they formed this club, the first incorporated golf club in the United States of America, and commissioned the famed architect, Stanford White, to build the clubhouse standing up on the hill, which is the first golf clubhouse in America. Three years later Shinnecock Hills would become a founding club of the USGA and would host the second U.S. Open Championship in 1896", explained Pickett.
"I can't think of a better golf course in the world than Shinnecock Hills. The architecture is just marvelous. It's timeless." Mike Davis, the USGA chief executive officer, said in a statement on the course.
Besides hosting the best players in the world, the U.S. Open offers fans of all ages the ultimate experience. From putting on a green, sending a virtual Father's Day card, taking a picture with the U.S. Open trophy and more.
Katie Bynum, head of Partnership and Championship Experiences, describes some of the events available for fans.
"In addition to some fantastic golf, we have a number of fantastic opportunities for fans to enjoy the championship. And certainly, fan central is not complete without the merchandise pavilion. There's 37,00 square feet and over 400,00 items for fans to buy", explained Bynum.
When picking a souvenir, pick something that'll be useful while you're on the golf course. With so much to choose, here are some options that caught our eye.
The merchandise pavilion can offer you an inexpensive ball marker that will be useful on the course. A commemorative Performance T-shirt from Ralph Lauren is great for after a round of golf. But for on the course, we found a couple of polos from Ralph Lauren that won't inhibit your back swing and the moisture wicking performance fabric will keep you dry and cool on those humid days on the course.
The RLX and Ralph Lauren polos have screen printed graphics of the 2018 U.S. Open on the right chest and look great while on the course. The quarter zip pullover jacket is a great lightweight jacket suitable for mild temperatures and wind. The elasticized bindings at the hem and stretchable material will keep the wind and cold out without affecting your golf game.
