Eckersley praises Sale, describes Sox as best team in American League
There was a full house Wednesday at the grand opening of Ollie's Bargain Outlet in Woonsocket, which featured a signing with Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley.
"It's kind of nice to mingle with the fans because you don't really do this all that often,” Eckersley told NBC 10 News.
But the big news in baseball on Wednesday was the Red Sox’s debut of pitching sensation Chris Sale.
Sales is only one game in, but Eckersley, who is also a NESN analyst, has big hopes for this year’s team.
“I'm glad they got Chris Sale, with David Price being hurt,” Eckersley said. “If you have David Price, everybody is picking the Red Sox to win to begin with, right? But with David Price down, you don't know when he's coming back, so what I'm getting at is if they hadn't gotten Chris Sale, it would be iffy right now. Everybody knows they have a great lineup, but it's all about pitching and you can never have enough. You have to be deep.”
He went on to describe the Red Sox as the best team in the American League.
“These fans are spoiled. They always have a good team and everybody's doing good -- the Celtics, the Patriots, whatever,” Eckersley said.
