Golden Apple: Lonna Razza
This week's Golden Apple Award goes to Lonna Razza, a health teacher and soccer coach at Toll Gate High School in Warwick.
Razza was nominated by Christine Ellingwood, a parent.
Ellingwood wrote that the dedication Razza has for her students and athletes goes beyond the classroom.
She rallied the whole school in a time of grief and sadness when 16-year-old Gianna Cirella, who was on the girls’ soccer team, was stricken with a blood infection.
There wasn't a day that went by that Razza didn't go to the hospital to visit her.
When Gianna died, heartache permeated the school.
Gianna's mother, Tara, attended the ceremony in honor of her daughter's coach and praised Razza.
"She stepped up when we really needed somebody to step up and she took care of those kids and she took care of my younger daughter in a way I couldn't have asked,” Tara said of Razza.
For Razza, who graduated from Toll Gate, she enjoys her job, as well as being there for students and parents alike.
“They're my kids. I love working with them. I love being with them,” she said.
