Flash flood watch issued for Southern New England

The National Weather Service has posted a flash flood watch as southern New England braces for some potentially heavy rain.

The National Weather Service says a flash flood watch for Southern New England is in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

NBC 10 Chief Meteorologist Mark Searles said there is a potential for heavy rain to develop locally, especially closer to the south coasts.

The watch impacts all of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Plymouth County and Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

While the advisory will continue through Friday morning and into the afternoon, Searles said he doubts the whole area will see enough rain that would cause the potential for flooding.

"I do think there's a higher chance -- a higher likelihood -- south and east of Providence, primarily southern Rhode Island and out here in southeastern Massachusetts," Searles said.
